2017 PRESIDENTS ADDRESS

A new fishing season has started and there are some changes that the Ohio Bass Federation membership has to be made aware of. From the membership numbers the OBF is growing as we had more members registered by the Open meeting than in the past.

If you missed the Open Meeting you missed out on a good time and some deals. One member bought a Power Pole for $800. Another member won a $1900 Lowrance unit for $900. Several hotel stays were given away and one member bought at a reasonable rate a one week stay at my rental on the Harris Chain in Florida. The raffle this year was different than past years as we did a Chinese raffle in which members bought tickets and then placed them in containers for five separate high end prizes. After those were drawn the remaining raffle tickets were mixed together and tickets were drawn for the other raffle items. Items at the Open meeting sold or given away include a Minn Kota Fortrex trolling motor, Power Pole, two Gen 3 Lowrance units, Humminbird unit, St. Croix rods, and Diawa rod and reel donated by Knox Marine. Mark February 3rd, 2018 on your calendar as next year’s Open Meeting date and get in on some of the bargains that others have been enjoying.

The 2017 TBF National Championship has been held and a new angler from the Federation has claimed the Living the Dream package. I am sorry to say that it is not one of the three boaters from Ohio. The three co-anglers did not win the other package either. However from the comments I heard they were treated well by TBF. This year as it was a transition year we had three boaters and co-anglers fishing the Championship. They had to compete against each other for two days and and the winning boater and co-angler from Ohio moved on to fish another two days. This will not happen again unless we have over fifty boats from Ohio fish the National Semi-Final and the winning co-angler has more weight that the winning boater.

With the new TBF National format I was asked what would happen to the discount programs that were offered to the old State Team. I am happy to announce that the programs did not go away and that all winners of the Regionals, Open Team Tournament, at least the Top 5 at the Championship and the anglers going to the TBF National Championship will receive the discount sponsor programs next year from Lowrance and Minn Kota.  This year we have sponsor incentive programs from Knox Marine, Venom Lures and ACT Lures as well as Ranger Cup money. If you win any of these prizes please use the discount card or gift it to someone who will and thank that sponsor on Facebook or in person. If you are not involved in social media please learn now. I know the average age of an OBF member is over 45 but please learn how from your grandchild. They will be happy to teach you how to post.

Regionals have started and I hope participation picks up. With each Regional getting back 60% of the entry fee  to use as payout I hope that will attract more members to fish in upcoming tournaments. Remember the amount of teams we send to the National Semi-Finals is determined by the number of anglers we having participating in OBF events. When the payouts at the Regionals are posted some of the Regionals will be paying out over $2000.

This year due to lack of participation in the Tournament of Champions we decided to try a different concept. On June 17th on O'Shaungessy Reservoir in Columbus there will an open team tournament in which both anglers fishing must be OBF members but can be from different clubs. This is a 100% payback after expenses. The winning team also gets a paid entry into the 2017 National Semi-Finals at the Detroit River on September 9th and 10th. Entries are already coming in and your boat number is determined when your entry is received so please enter now.

The Championship this year will be at Rocky Fork Lake on July 22 and 23rd. I originally wanted to hold the Championship the week after the 4th of July at Marietta, Ohio out of the Muskingum River Ramp. I had a permit but then the Mayor's office called me and asked if we were going to be out in the Ohio River. When I stated yes I was told that that weekend is a big power boat race at the mouth of the Muskingum River and all boat traffic is shut down. I then contacted Rocky Fork and was told that that weekend was open. This week I found out that starting on July 24th is Family Camp week and all hotels in Hillsboro are booked solid starting on Friday, July 21st. If you are fishing the Championship you will need to find lodging in Chillicothe, Wilmington or Washington Court House. All are about 30 to 35 miles from lake. I am sorry but no one told me this as they only looked at our dates of the 22nd and 23rd.

The Youth tournament will be held at Mosquito Lake on August 27th. Details will be posted on the OBF website.

The National Semi-Final will be hosted by Michigan at the Detroit River out of Elizabeth Park Ramp on September 9th and 10th. Lodging is available at the Trenton exit and I suggest that you contact the Best Western at Trenton. The phone number is 734 676-8000. Fishing will be in Michigan waters only. This year even though TBF has a cut-off date of a week before the tournament OBF  anglers fishing must accept and pay for their entry to the National Semi-Finals two weeks before the tournament. I will send a reminder once and if you do not accept and pay for the entry a week before the TBF deadline your entry will be canceled and I will move on to the next angler on the list. Do not wait to enter the National Semi-Final or you will be shut out. Also all club presidents I will contact you for your two club entries after the Championship.

What is next? OBF needs to grow. Whether you like it or not we are an organization of old men. We need new ideas to stimulate young anglers to join and fish and get involved in upper management of OBF. Perhaps free OBF membership to youth anglers who are old enough to fish in the adult side. They would still have to pay TBF and FLW dues. Maybe extend this offer to college fishing clubs. I hope the money from the Regionals and Open Tournament will generate new members. Also Regions can also have their own Open Team Tournaments. From the response from Directors I believe that will happen. If you have an idea to promote growth please contact me or any Board member.

In parting I am leaving in February 2019. This is my last term as President. Over the past years I have seen many changes and originated many changes to OBF. Some I admit were not good but I believe some have helped us and saved the OBF money. Thank you for reading this and I want your feedback.
